East meets West
May 11, 2008Our first full in day in Hong Kong was spent traveling between Kowloon, the peninsula on which we’re staying, and Hong Kong Island — a short Star Ferry or taxi ride away

It’s hard to tell, at first glance, whether you’re in Hong Kong or New York. Arriving at Central Pier on HKI, the shoreline boasts a sea of skyscrapers with neon signs for companies such as Philips, Samsung, MGM, LG and even Bank of America.

The overcast sky made no difference as we set out on foot through the winding skyway onto the streets of HKI. Architecture is reminiscent of the former British rule, although there are some buildings that are more commonly found in other large cities in China.
Sunday was all about discovering the culture on our own. We split into smaller groups and navigated our way through HKI — some on the hunt for computer software.
Lunch happened at a Nepalese restaurant followed by coffee and dessert at an English coffee house, all along Hollywood Road. Down one particular road was a steep hill full of produce and meat stands. At last, something that looks traditional!
